We Could All Learn From This Child

This video is one that has made it across the internet a few times, but I am still touched, hurt and angered by what is being said.  This young girl, at the tender age of 12, understood the Earth's problems long before they became mainstream.  I do remember learning about endangered species in elementary school - I am only three years older than her - but most of what she says shows a level of maturity that goes beyond the perception most of us had at that age.

Her father is Dr. David Suzuki, a well-known marine biologist in Canada, who long before becoming an environmentalist, studied marine wildlife and hosted the well-known program, A Nature of Things.  The environment became an important part of his life because of his scientific research since he saw firsthand the damage done to sea life.

David never forced his daughter to become what she is today, nor to write the speech that has inspired nations for decades.  Having learned from example, Severn was inspired by a role-model who is determined, just and compassionate.  The anger she expresses is well-directed and from a justifiable source.

I invite you to watch this video and comment on how you feel about what she says - things that are still such important issues across the globe.  Her passion is contagious.

Vote no 2. Great blog and very moving and powerful video. I hadn't heard of her, I must admit; she was amazingly eloquent even at the age of 12, wasn't she? That was 20 years ago and, sad to say, things seem to have got worse all round the planet since then, not better. Except that the vegan movement is growing, so that gives me hope! My next blog is on that theme actually, so look out for that! :-)

Powerful and eloquent, definitely. She still gives speeches today - which doesn't surprise me! Her full name is Severn Cullis-Suzuki, if you want to look her up. She is Canadian and still very much active. I had the chance to see her live during the Ottawa Go Green Expo. She was hugely pregnant - around 8 months or so! - but, unlike her video, she was bubbly and captivating. Her audience was different, too; she was talking to those who are already aware of what concerns her, so she smiling! I am looking forward to reading your post!

Am in tears now :'( can feel the frightening sense of insecurity developing in these young minds.....and am sad :( not for the plight of Mother Earth till date...but for the very rude fact that still are we not opening our eyes and just keep going blah-blah about the stuff, not getting into action and we know that we can't bring back all that we have already lost! Aaahh....what a painful truth! :(( Thanks SnakeWitch, for sharing Veganara called it 'powerful' vid which am gonna share further...Definitely voted!

I know. They call that video the "Little Girll Who Quieted the World for 8 Minutes", but what did they do afterwards? SQUAT! This message could be used in schools and environmental organisations today!

voted! I know David Susuki, and remember he came to my school to give a talk, but I did not know that his daughter was an activist. I will have a look at the video.
