Vegan Indian Onion Fritters

Street food is as exotic as India itself. Today I am going share a recipe of onion fritters popularly known as bhajiyas, in India. It could easily be passed off as a spicy North Indian version of onion rings! I will be using chickpea flour and raw onions today as the combination of both these ingredients gives a warm nutty flavor to this snack. In India you can get to eat this snack almost everywhere, at any given point of time. But we can also prepare this deliciously easy snack at home. These golden brown crispy snacks, when served with chutney or sauce, taste scrumptious.


• 1 large onion

• 4-5 table spoon chickpea flour

• Salt to taste

• 1 table spoon Chopped coriander

• 1 teaspoon red chili powder

• 1 teaspoon cumin powder

• Oil for frying


STEP 1: Take the onion and cut it into thin half moons. Place the chopped onion in a separate bowl.

STEP 2: Mix together the chickpea flour, salt, red chili powder in a bowl.

STEP 3: Add the chopped onions as well as coriander to the mixture. Now combine all the ingredients. The mixture should not be too dilute, and it should not be too lumpy either. Add water according to the consistency of the mixture until it can thinly coat the back of a spoon.

STEP 4: Heat oil in a pan.

STEP 5: Now drop small mounds of the mixture in the pan.

STEP 6: Once the fritters turn golden brown, it means your fritters are ready.

STEP 7: Place on a paper napkin to remove the excess oil.

Serve them piping hot with chutney or another great vegan sauce!
