I was talking to my vegan -yogi -health coach friend Chris the other day and she mentioned “Golden Milk”. She asked me if I had ever heard of it? I hadn’t. She told me to Google it and I’m still surprised on how popular this ancient drink is these days. I can’t believe I’d never heard of it.
Anyway, I researched it and found out it has so many benefits and it’s so easy to prepare.
Let’s start with the benefits of this soothing drink. Turmeric is the main ingredient. Turmeric has been used for centuries in India as a remedy to fight depression, inflammation, and degenerative brain disorders, heart disease, for cancer prevention, colds and congestion (and many, many more)
You can make it with any dairy free milk. I chose coconut milk because of its health benefits and taste; which I love. Like I’ve said before here many times-- I love coconut everything!
It also needs the coconut oil to help absorb the turmeric and increase its health benefits.
So, if you or someone you know is fighting depression, pain, inflammation or the flu; share this recipe with them or invite them over for a warm cup and a nice time.
Here’s how to prepare it.
Ingredients for the Golden paste:
- ½ cup of turmeric powder
- 1 cup of water
- 1 teaspoon of black pepper
Ingredients for the Golden milk:
- 1 tablespoon of golden paste
- 2 cups of organic coconut milk (almond, soy, rice, hemp, etc)
- 1 teaspoon of coconut oil
- pinch of cinnamon * optional
Directions for the Golden paste:
- Cook the ingredients together at medium heat for about 8 minutes, until it has a “toothpaste” consistency. Store in a glass jar in the fridge for up to three weeks.
Directions for the Golden Milk:
- Mix 1 tablespoon of Golden paste with the coconut milk, coconut oil and cinnamon.
- In a small pot heat while stirring until well combined.
- Drink warm.
Chris suggested that you have it first thing in the morning or at night and avoid eating anything at least 45 minutes after .
When researching Golden Milk, I found a few recipes with other additions: ginger, cardamom, vanilla extract, etc.
I guess you could give it your personal touch; but this basic recipe is from a yogi who had it all the time, in India- so she knows.
