Take Your Fruit Salad to the Next Level

Fruit salad is one of my favorite ways to celebrate summer. When it's hot out, what better way to stay cool and enjoy life than with a delicious fruit salad? Unfortunately, many fruit salads just kind of sit there and don't pop. All that is about to change.

First make your fruit salad. You can use any fruits you like! If you are eating local, then that makes your choices for you. However, if you want to expand your taste palette, then you can add a few tropicals in there. 

My favorite fruit salad is made with:

  • bananas
  • strawberries
  • apples
  • oranges (these are actually essential to making a fruit salad work)

Sometimes, I'll add starfruit or watermelon for extra oomph. Cut everything into cubes or slices, depending on the fruit.

The trick to making this the best fruit salad ever, is lime.

Take a lime, any kind, and squeeze out the juice. You can also zest the skin. Mix the juice with about a cup of water and soak your apples and bananas in it to prevent browning. Any fruit that turns brown upon exposure to air should be dunked.

Drain your fruit and toss everything together. Don't forget the oranges! Then put that salad in the fridge for a minimum of an hour. Toss again before serving to get all those juices mixed. 

The combination of flavors is a personal one, but the lime and orange really add a zing that we love around here. 

Fun extras to toss into a regular fruit salad:

  • Blueberries
  • Cantelope
  • Coconut shavings
  • Vanilla extract

When I was young, we would eat fruit salad with ice cream for lunch at my grandmother's house. It was a wonderful tradition that I have passed on to my children. That's precisely what we intend to do this summer.
