Followers of a vegan diet do not necessarily stick to lentils and tempeh these days. Vegetables and meatless innovations have certainly reaped skyrocketing popularity.
The city of Oakland is growing with more and more people trying to escape from the high-priced rents in San Francisco and the area's vegan options are growing as well in order to counterbalance the upsurge. While there is a slew of vegan-only regions from which to choose, plant-based options can be found in nearly every bar, coffee shop, or restaurant in town.
The Bay Area have a yen for foodie experimentation and watchful eating, so it's hardly surprising that it actually accommodates scads of vegan and vegetarian eating places in the bid to appease the appetites of these ardent herbivores. Notably, San Francisco no longer spearheads the action.
According to the latest VegNews ranking that throws more light on the top vegan cities in the United States, Oakland has ousted San Francisco becoming the Bay Area's newly crowned vegan capital. Locals had already anticipated this.
Oakland houses an array of dining businesses that not only tout the perceptions of a vegan diet but also play host to a VegFest each May that lasts for a week. Eric Tucker's Millennium is a top fine-dining pack, which relocated to Oakland's Rockridge from San Francisco just a couple of years ago.
Furthermore, casual locations such as Hella Vegan Eats uphold the fact that vegan food is fitting even in a Biergarten (German for beer garden) setting. This vegan-friendly region offers everything from a tempeh bacon breakfast burrito to okra gumbo (served at Oakland-based Timeless Coffee and Souley Vegan, respectively).
Thanks to restaurants such as Timeless Coffee, Souley Vegan, and Millennium, Oakland, California managed to grab the fifth spot, while Los Angeles secured the No. 1 spot in the list of top 10 vegan cities in the US by VegNews. It's also worth noting that among others, the aforesaid destinations are on Eater’s 18 Essential East Bay Vegan and Vegetarian Restaurants map.
