When you hear the word 'lavender', chances are you think of sweet-smelling body lotions and perfumes that give your mood a boost. But lavender is so much more. Here are some benefits of this herb.
- 1. Sniff it When You’re Stressed!
Lavender is known for its calming properties. When used with other relaxants, lavender can make them more potent. A sniff of lavender when you're stressed out or anxious can help to bring you back into the moment.
- 2. Zap that Headache
Whether you suffer from sinus headaches or those that spring up from tension or gastric problems, lavender can be highly beneficial in easing your pain. Simply rub some lavender oil onto your temples, forehead or neck when you feel pain coming on.
- 3. Clear Up Flu Symptoms
Add approximately four drops of lavender oil to a bowl of hot water and breathe in the steam. Remember to keep your head covered with a towel and close your eyes. By just breathing this in for a few minutes, you can clear up colds or flu symptoms.
- 4. Keep Bugs at Bay
When you’re spending time outdoors, it’s a nuisance to be bombarded with bugs. Many bugs and insects dislike the scent of lavender so keep it around you. And, if you have been bitten by a mosquito or other insect, lavender oil is great because it works as an anti-inflammatory.
- 5. Say Bye to Blemishes!
Lavender oil can help to treat acne, which can be both painful and embarrassing when it flares up. When added to chamomile, lavender can be a beneficial treatment for eczema. Add it to your general skincare regimen as it can also help diminish scars and wrinkles.
- 6. Catch Some Zzzzzs
Due to its relaxant quality, lavender can help you sleep better. Place some dried lavender into your pillow cover or sleep mask when insomnia strikes.
- 7. Get Rid of Pain
Massaging the body with lavender oil can help to ease various pains, including painful joints, muscle aches or tension, rheumatism, backache and even sprains.
- 8. Make Laundry Fresher
Apply a few drops of lavender oil onto your laundry drier sheet so that your clothes come out smelling delicious!
- 9. Create Natural Air Freshener
By mixing lavender oil with distilled water and adding these to a spray bottle, you can naturally give your home fresher air.
- 10. Relieve Sun Burn
When your skin burns from having been in the sun, relieve it by applying some lavender oil to a carrier oil and then applying this blend to the sore area.
- Tips to Remember:
- 1. Lavender oil is quite powerful so use it in small amounts.
- 2. Always dilute lavender oil with water or a carrier oil before applying it to your skin. Examples of carriers include grape seed oil or jojoba oil.
- 3. You should never ingest lavender oil (yes, even though it smells good enough to eat!). There are some types of lavender that can be used in tea or recipes - always check that they are safe for consumption.
