Joe Clyde has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. However, according to his neurologist, he is suffering from the slowest progressing case of the disease. The slow-progressing nature of the disease is believed to be credited to Clyde’s food habits.
It has been more than a year since 77 year old Joe Clyde and his 75 year old wife Margene Clyde completely eliminated animal products from their diet. Since then, the couple have not only lost a lot of weight, but have also experienced significant improvement in their health.
Mr. and Mrs. Clyde decided to stop eating animal products after attending the Conference on Extraordinary Living a couple of years back. There, they heard physician and lifestyle-medicine specialist Charlie Ross. Ross, who is one of the well known advocates of vegan diet, talked about different benefits of becoming vegan.
The Clydes were so inspired by Ross’ speech that they changed their food habits right after returning home.
Here, it must be mentioned that the elderly couple have always been extremely conscious about fitness. They regularly go to a gym and are also avid cyclists. Additionally, they have always followed a diet plan that, according to most, is extremely healthy. However, their food habit was never as healthy as it is now.
Although the daily diet of the Clydes included plenty of fruits and vegetables, they used to eat animal products such as eggs, meat, and dairy at least once every day.
After returning home from the conference, the couple purchased a number of books recommended by Ross. The majority of those books had amazing vegan recipes. The Clydes found all the ingredients mentioned in those recipes at Sherm’s Thunderbird Market in Roseburg.
The couple decided to take turns to prepare their vegan meals. This is a nice way of dealing with the change as the preparation time required for a vegan meal is significantly higher than the time required to prepare a regular meal.
A regular meal can be prepared using packaged food. However, in case of vegan meals, using fresh vegetables and fruits is mandatory. As a result, these days, the Clydes need to spend a lot of time cleaning, peeling and cutting the fruits, vegetables and leafy greens they eat. The couple, however, enjoy the entire experience and treats it like an adventurous ride.
The most prominent change the Clydes have noticed is the drop in their body weight. Margene’s BMI has dropped from 29 to 22 and Joe Clyde has managed to lose a whopping 20 pounds. Joe has even started eating oil-rich food items such as nuts and avocados as he has become slightly underweight.
Joe has experienced the most significant improvements. This is mainly because he was the one suffering from severe health issues. Five years back, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and is also a stroke survivor.
The new eating habit has succeeded in reducing the symptoms of Parkinson’s and Joe’s chances of having a stroke have also decreased considerably. Today, he has a pretty healthy cardiovascular profile. His cholesterol level has dropped to 178 from 210.
The change in food habit has allowed Margene Clyde to experience significant reduction in her arthritis symptoms.
The benefits of a vegan diet have been so prominent for the Clydes that today they can’t imagine becoming omnivores again.
