Living in Los Angeles is not easy. I spend a majority of my life stuck in traffic, the air quality is shocking, and there are far too many beautiful people. However, the amazing vegan food that this city has to offer pretty much makes up for it.nI’ve been living here for the last year and thought I’d share some of the great vegan food experiences I’ve had.
1. SMORGASBURG LA – If you’re lucky enough to be in or around Los Angeles on a Sunday, please visit Smorgasburg. Lotated in downtown, Smorgasburg is an incredible collection of the best food trucks Los Angeles has to offer, all located in one convenient parking lot downtown with music and a beer garden. This is a true food paradise for literally everyone and anyone. While it's not strictly vegan, about 40% of all vendors are dedicated vegan, and a majority of the others have vegan options. Cena Vegan does incredible smoked vegan "meats" and serves them in the form of exceptional tacos, burritos, and so much more. There's also vegan mac and cheese, sushi, ice cream and so, so, so much more. You will run out of stomach space well before you run out of money, I promise.
2. Krimsey's Cajun Kitchen - Krimsey's is dangerously close to my house and was one of the first vegan spots I found in LA. I love it! The food is unique, the fact that it is all vegan is awesome, and it's a super cute little spot, too. It's classic Cajun with a vegan twist, and they nail it. Their po boys are amazing, their Jambalaya is exceptional, and their hearts of palm salad, just yes. Plus they have hush puppies and a bunch of incredible vegan sauces to boot.
3. Doomie's - Every city needs a vegan barbecue/burger/junk food spot. I was very relieved when I found just that in LA, and even more relieved when I went there and it was PERFECT. Doomie's is divey, affordable, not at all pretentious, and most importantly, delicious. When they say big sides they mean it, when they say spicy they mean it, when they say messy they definitely mean it. Any place with seven different types of loaded vegan fries and a peanut butter bacon burger should be on your list.
4. Crossroads - If you're looking for a fancy date night out with some great wine and "high-end" vegan food, you can't go past Crossroads. To me, this place is the pinnacle of what vegan food can be. They push boundaries and confuse your taste buds in the best possible way. Hearts of palm crab cakes, artichoke oysters, and almond-ricotta stuffed zucchini blossoms. I kid you not, those are literally just the starters. I know it's hard, but please try to save room for desert. You'll thank me later.
Of course, this is just the very tip of the vegan iceberg in Los Angeles. I've been to many more incredible places, and there are even more on my list that I haven't made it to yet. What a time to be alive! If you have your own favorite vegan spots in LA - let me know. Maybe you'll see me there - I'll be the one stuffing my face with six different entrees...
