How a Vegan Diet Can Treat Asthma

There are alternative therapies that have proven beneficial to treating asthma and one of them is the vegan diet. Here is why it works.

If you struggle with asthma you’ll know how frightening it can be. Luckily, the medical world is always coming up with new ways to keep your asthma under control. Food can influence health conditions, sometimes improving or worsening them, and with asthma it’s no different.

Some foods can trigger asthma symptoms even though you might not be allergic to them. So it’s worth cutting out these foods. Then, you should add more vegan foods to your meals. A study from 2010 found that following a vegan diet for a year along with avoiding sugar, salt, chlorinated tap water and caffeine, showed improvement in asthma sufferers.

Including antioxidants in your diet can help to tackle oxidative stress which has been said to contribute to asthma. You can find antioxidants in fruits and vegetables, which are often a large part of the vegan diet.

Vegan-friendly antioxidants and nutrients that fight asthma include:

  • Vitamin C

According to research by Yale University, people who consume large amounts of Vitamin C have less shortness of breath and wheezing after exercise. Why Vitamin C is so beneficial to the lungs is that it increases the body’s histamine metabolism. These are the chemicals that prevent airways to swell up. Great sources of Vitamin C include kale, strawberries, grapefruit, oranges and lemons.

  • Vitamin B6

Studies have found that Vitamin B6 can decrease the frequency and intensity of asthma attacks because it produces molecules (adenosine triphosphate and cyclic adenosine monophosphate) that help the bronchial tissues to relax. Foods rich in Vitamin B6 include sunflower seeds, pistachio nuts and bananas.

  • Rosmarinic Acid

This acid is a great antioxidant while it helps to keep the air passages clear so that breathing is easier. It’s also known to keep inflammation down. You can find rosmarinic acid in a variety of herbs, including peppermint, sage, rosemary and thyme.
