Healthy Steamed Vegan Momos [Traditional Tibetan Dumplings]

Momos belong to the Tibetan cuisine and are widely loved in various parts of the world. The recipe I am about to share today is an authentic Tibetan recipe that is both vegan and extremely healthy. Momos are a very popular street food in many places today, they are essentially dumplings that are steamed or fried.  So this time, I am going to share one of my favourite recipes of steamed vegan momos. These are healthy and extremely easy to make. In this recipe, I will make the filing by using different vegetables. You can customise the filling according to your taste; I’m using my favourite vegetables to make this recipe. So let’s get started with these healthy, steamed vegan momos.


For the dough:

  • 2 cups of all-purpose flour
  • Oil
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • Pinch of salt

For the filling:

  • 1 cup of cabbage
  • ½ cup of onions
  • ½ cup of French beans
  • ½ cup of carrots
  • ½ cup of bell pepper
  • 1 teaspoon of garlic
  • 1 teaspoon of black pepper powder
  • Oil as required
  • Salt to taste


For the dough:

Step 1: Take a bowl, add the flour, salt, and water.

Step 2: Now, mix the ingredients and start preparing the dough out of this mixture. The dough should be slightly rubbery and not too watery. Once the dough is ready, you can set it aside to rise for some time.

For the filling:

Step 1: Take some oil in a pan, add the finely chopped garlic and let it cook for about 2 minutes.

Step 2: Now, add the finely chopped onions and sauté the mixture for 2 minutes, until the colour of the mixture turns golden brown.

Step 3: Next, add the finely chopped cabbage, bell pepper, carrot, and French beans to the mixture.

Step 4: Stir fry the vegetables and add the black pepper and salt.

Step 5: Now, simply let the mixture cook for 5-7 minutes. Once the mixture is cooked, you can keep it aside.

Preparing the Momos:

Step 1: Take the dough and make small balls of around 2-3 inches.

Step 2: Take each ball and roll out small circles. The size of each circle can be around 3-4 inches in diameter.

Step 3: Now, take the filling and put it in the centre of the circle. Do the same for all the other balls.

Step 4: Next, take the edges of the circle and gather them together to seal the top. Make sure the filling doesn’t come out.

Step 5: Heat water in a steamer. Once the water is heated, place the momos in there. Let them steam for about 5 minutes.

Step 6: Check if the covering of the momos is soft. If the covering is soft that means the momos are cooked. Serve piping hot with sauce or chutney.
