This juice was a happy accident! When I first bought my juicer I experimented with all kinds of fruit and veg combinations. One day, using what was left in the crisper drawer, this juice emerged and it wowed me! I think I may have said Wow out loud... :)
It's the perfect balance of tart and sweet, and the tease of zingy heat from the ginger sends it over the edge. You will feel a little naughty drinking it, it tastes so good, but you will feel a bit nice too because it's wildly good for you! The dark leafy greens are nutrient-dense and fiber-rich, plus: you know what they say about an apple a day. :)
Green Heaven Juice
3-4 leaves organic Swiss/Rainbow Chard
1-2 organic Fuji Apples
1 cup Concord Grapes
1 organic Orange, peeled (optional)
1 inch fresh Ginger Root
1/2 lime, rind on
You need a juice extractor for this recipe, the kind you put whole pieces of fruit through. I have a really basic one I got for less than $30 at Target. I use it all the time, for years now, and it still works great. Also, I highly recommend Jay Kordich's The Juiceman's Power of Juicing, a book I cherish; it's an awesome primer full of recipes, tips and juicy health remedies.
Refrigerate all ingredients prior to juicing. Put all ingredients through the juicer. Skim the foam off the top of the final product. Serve within 10 minutes, as nutrients are lost quickly with fresh juices. I like it super cold and enjoy it over ice.
*Adding the orange makes it literally, lighter and juicier. If you prefer it more concentrated and intense like a wheatgrass shot, omit the orange. The reason you peel the orange and not the lime has to do with digestion. Orange, grapefruit and tangerine rinds are hard on the tummy, but lemons and limes are fine.
This is the yummiest, most-enlivening drink ever! A favorite treat and health tonic; it will perk you right up. Think of it as "veggie coffee!" :)
