Spirulina Protein Power Shake

This is the original gangsta rap inspired protein drink that will superfuel you, while providing tons of antioxidants, healthy carbs, and protein. It is a great blend for adding whatever supplements and superfoods you might be taking, that maybe don't taste the best on their own or with water.

Blueberries are rich in antioxidants, vitamin C, minerals, and digestive cleansing pectin. Bananas are the original superfuel packing in pottassium and healthy sugars. Bananas are a great weight loss/workout food for a few reasons. One, their high pottassium is important since most people take in too much sodium and not enough pottassium contributing to water weight and fluid retention. They also contain oligosaccharides, a kind of sugar which feeds your healthy stomach bacteria "prebiotics." This increases your probiotics, which can contribute to improved digestion and a flatter tummy.

Purple Drink

yeilds 1 quart

  • 4 bananas, peeled
  • 2 cups blueberries, frozen or fresh (I like frozen for the ice cream effect)
  • 2 cups cold H20
  • Optional Superfoods and proteins:

I like a combination of:

  • 1 heaping scoop sprouted brown rice protein (I especially like Epic Protein's Vanilla Lucuma) but you could also use hemp protein or whatever protein you like
  • 2 teaspoons spirulina or other algae
  • 1 heaping tablespoon tocotreinols (rice bran solubles that are a potent source of vitamin E)


Blend all ingredients in a blender, preferably at high speed. I like to pulse my smoothies till they are smooth, instead of straight blending them. This prevents oxidation and makes the texture better. Play around with different things to add to the smoothie, like maca, mesquite, vanilla powder, spinach etc.

Some folks prefer their fruits and veggies straight up, so extra oomph. I think that is great too. For me though I like to use this flavorful mix as a backdrop for whole food-based supplements that I have come to enjoy over the years. Experiment for yourself and see what you like best in your "Purple Drink."
