You want baked goods that are delicious, fluffy and wholesome, right? Well, before you strap on your apron, here are five great egg substitutes to make use of the next time the baking bug strikes.
- 1. Flax Seeds
These can be used instead of egg whites in recipes. When mixed with water, they become sticky and resemble the texture of egg whites. They're also healthy for you because of their omega-3 content. Flax seeds work best in recipes like pancakes, whole-grain goods, muffins and cookies. To replace one egg, you will need to mix together 1 tablespoon of flax seeds in 3 tablespoons of water. Let it soak for 15 minutes prior to use.
- 2. Bananas
These fruits become creamy and help to keep all your ingredients together. Make sure you use them in a recipe where the banana flavour will complement the other ingredients. Bananas work well in a variety of treats, such as pancakes, breads, muffins and cakes. 1/4 cup of mashed ripe banana will be the equivalent of one egg.
- 3. Applesauce
This is similar to bananas, and will give your recipes a nice fluffiness and extra moisture. The great thing about applesauce is that it doesn’t have a lot of flavour so you can use it various recipes without worrying about the taste being overpowering. Fill a cup with 1/4 applesauce to replace one egg.
- 4. Mashed Potatoes
Savoury dishes won't do well with sweet ingredients such as banana, so you want something that will help to work as a binding agent without much flavour. Mashed potatoes can work well in savoury recipes such as vegetable loaves. 1/4 cup of mashed potato will be the equivalent of one egg in your recipe.
There you go. Four easy ways to replace eggs when you want to bake something deliciously vegan! Enjoy!
