Hey, just wanted to give a friendly health tip on Dr. Sunshine! Humans have been living in the sun for hundreds of thousands of years, making it an important part in good health. At first you want to ease back into the sun, try wearing hats instead of using sunblock which is made of nasty stuff, definitely not good for the skin.
Getting at least 30 min of sunlight twice a week is very important. Sunlight causes the production of vitamin D, which is actually a steroid. vitamin D has over 100 links to positive health. This is most clearly seen in some people that get SAD (seasonal affective disorder) which results in behavioral changes from the decrease in sun exposure moving from summer to autumn to winter. In the hospital I volunteer at, there was a presentation on how the rising amount of people with type 2 diabetes may be linked with vitamin D deficiencies (from lack of sunlight). Other benefits of sunlight are:
1.) that it has antibacterial properties to help you kill harmful bacteria
2.) You typically also get fresh air with sunlight
3.) You get healthy skin, as opposed to one of those ugly leathery tans when you have sunlight in moderation
4.) You better regulate the pineal gland in your brain, which helps with hormone secretions letting you function better and sleep soundly
5.) Vitamin D helps build strong bones along with calcium The bottom line here is that there is little need to fear the sunlight that has been sensationalized to cause cancer and all sorts of other problems, in fact it's as healthy as becoming vegan!
