Easy Creamy Vegan Cheese Sauce using Nutritional Yeast!

A very versatile and deliciously creamy "cheese" sauce for vegan mac n' cheese, casseroles, drizzled on veggies (like steamed broccoli...yum!), veggie burger/ hot dog spread, added to a soup to make it cheesy and creamy...and so much more! It's pretty healthy too, as far as "cheese" sauces go! And it's pretty darn fast to make too! If you haven't tried or heard of nutritional yeast, it has a nutty/cheesy flavour and looks a bit like fish food (hehe). You can find it in a lot of health food stores or the "health food" section of grocery stores and online. A lot of nutritional yeast comes fortified with B-vitamins, so that's an added bonus! :)



  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 3/4 cup nutritional yeast
  • 2 tbs tahini
  • 3 tbs corn starch (or arrowroot starch)
  • 1 tbs lemon juice
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • ground black pepper to taste
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp dry mustard (or regular mustard if you don't have dry)
  • pinch of cayenne, optional
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika, optional
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric, optional


  1. Add all the ingredients into a blender/food processor and blend until fully mixed and smooth.
  2. Pour into a pot on the stove and heat to medium-low heat, stirring occasionally. Once it starts to thicken, remove from the heat and stir again and it should thicken up a bit more. If it's too thick, add a bit more almond milk. If it's too thin, add a bit more nutritional yeast and/or corn starch. It should only take a couple of minutes to thicken up on the stove, so don't leave it or else the bottom may start to burn on the bottom of the pot. :)
  3. Use right away or allow to cool before transferring to an airtight container and placing in the fridge. I think this should probably be used up within 3-4 days, if it lasts that long!

    This is my favorite vegan cheese sauce recipe! Just made it and it really hit that cheddar flavor spot. I did sub coconut milk for almond but I love that the ingredient list is full of things I always have on hand :)
