When I was young, I used to wait with anticipation for the Sears “Wish” catalogue to arrive in the mail. It was thick, it was festive, and it had all my favorite toys to circle, hoping that they would be under the tree Christmas morning.
As much fun as it was flipping through the pages as a kid, I think I enjoy my new holiday catalogue even more. Oprah’s Favorite Things, now an honored tradition, is the adult (and luxurious) holiday wish list. Since its inception on The Oprah Winfrey Show back in 1996, people (mainly women), have been going bananas for Oprah’s pick, and it’s easy to see why. The products she chooses are consistently sophisticated, joyful, colorful, practical and usually beautiful.
This year the list is no different in terms of luxury. There are Dr. Dre wireless earphones, brightly colored scarves, essential oil candles, expensive bathrobes -- the works.
The list is not without its drawbacks. Namely, I believe that the inclusion of goods with animal by-products is unnecessary. However, there are some interesting and sensational picks in Oprah’s Favorite Things that are cruelty-free. So I sat down with my chai tea and picked my 10 favorite things of Oprah’s favorite things.
1. Something to Drink With:
Mugs are always a good gift to give and receive. These hot beverage mugs are made of ceramic and are $50 for a set of 6.
2. Something for your Skin:
Montreal skin care expert Jennifer Brodeur prides herself on making non-toxic, natural skin care products. Her toner “combines the powerful properties of organic aloe, willow bark, green tea, grape seed extract and alteromonas ferment extract from the deep sea.” Price tag: $60 a bottle.
3. Something to Grow:
For the green thumb in your life there is this organic grow kit. It's eco-friendly, fresh and “easy”.
4. Something to Cook In:
These pleasing Stoneware Mini Bakers would make great gifts for helpful neighbors and friends. Bake a casserole, or as Oprah suggests, mashed cauliflower and then gift it to a friend, stoneware and all!
5. Something to Read:
Of course Ms. Winfrey has a book on her list! Written by the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, this book, called The Book of Joy is sure to give the gift of peace and joy this season.
6. Something Stylish:
I’ve wanted glasses so badly all my life and when I finally need them, I’m getting Oprah’s glasses. Tres chic.
7. Something Free!:
Something free? you say. This app is gorgeously designed. Solve the puzzles to reveal an inspiring phrase.
8. Something to Start the New Year off Right:
If these elegant infuser bottles can’t make you drink more water, nothing will.
9. Something Animal Themed:
“These little creatures are powerful mini Bluetooth speakers that produce clear room-filling sound. Once you’re done singing along, enable the selfie feature and snap a pic." — Oprah
10. Something that Gives Back:
Giving is better than receiving. These bold clutches support women artisans in developing communities.
Leave a comment and let me know what YOUR favorite thing is! (on Oprah's list or otherwise).
