Has anyone ever bothered you about being vegan because “no one does stuff like that”? Well, here are ten celebrities you can use to prove them wrong!
1. Pamela Anderson
We all know her as the Baywatch Babe (or whatever else you happen to wish to associate her with), but did you know she’s also a vegan? Announced at the PETA 30th anniversary celebration in 2010, Pamela claimed that her vegan diet has helped her manage her Hepatitis C, which she has had since 2002. She had been a longtime animal rights activist and a vegetarian since her teenage years. Not only has her vegan lifestyle helped her cope with her illness, it also enables her to be physically fit so we can all watch her on shows like Dancing With The Stars or Skating With The Stars.
2. Russell Brand
This crazy guy has been a vegetarian since age 14 and a vegan since October 2011. He made this decision after watching a documentary titled Forks over Knives, a film about the impacts of eating animals on health and well-being. You may know him as Katy Perry’s ex-husband, or just a wacky English comedian, starring in movies such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Rock of Ages, or Get Him to the Greek.
3. Bill Clinton
You probably don’t know who this guy is, but he’s famous. He decided to go vegan in 2011 due to health reasons, and celebrated his 66th birthday in August 2012, after losing over 24 pounds. With a history of heart problems, this former President decided to go vegan after many heart problems, wanting to fulfill his dream of living long enough to become a grandfather. Since converting, he feels much better about his body, citing good blood tests and vital signs. His daughter, Chelsea, was married in 2010, so maybe he will become a grandfather in the coming years!
4. Ellen DeGeneres
As you may know, Ellen is the gracious host of her very own show, aptly named The Ellen Degeneres Show. Although Ellen does eat eggs, she is sometimes cited as one of the popular celebrity vegans. To her defense, she only eats eggs from her neighbors’ chickens, which she said are “happy, they’re really happy chickens.” She decided to go vegan after reading books like Diet For A New America, and watching documentaries such as Earthlings and Meet Your Meat.
5. Avril Lavigne
Our favorite Sk8er Gurl, and the lucky wife of Nickelback’s frontman (Jokes, people), Avril decided to go vegan in order to fit into her wedding dress. Since then, she is cited as maintaining an about 90% vegan diet. Gotta look good for Nickelback, amirite?
This singer was voted the “World’s Sexiest Vegetarian” by PETA in 2006, and he follows a strict vegan diet. He has produced 10 platinum albums, and 30 Top 40 singles. You may know him for his hit album Purple Rain, which is also the name of a film he starred in.
7. Brad Pitt
While this was a large argument point between him and Angelina Jolie about how to raise their children, Brad Pitt remains an advocate for the vegan lifestyle. I’m sure you know who he is, as he is quite famous and pretty ripped if you ask me. Some of his major films are Fight Club, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and the Ocean’s series.
8. Mike Tyson
This one surprised me quite a bit. You may know Mike Tyson as the boxer who once bit off his opponent’s ear in a fight. Now, he can no longer bite ears and doesn’t even eat meat! After committing to a vegetarian diet and losing 100 pounds, Tyson decided to go the whole way and become a full-fledged vegan. He says that becoming vegan has given him a chance at a new and better life, citing past issues with drug use, high blood pressure, and arthritis. He says that backing away from processed foods has made him a better person, and he wishes he was born a vegan.
9. Venus and Serena Williams
These sisters dominated the women’s tennis scene for so long there is no way you haven’t heard of them. Together, they hold 22 Grand Slam titles, and have both been ranked number 1 in the female tennis scene. In fact, in 2012, Venus and Serena were ranked number 1 and 2 respectively. Venus has made the switch to a vegan diet for health reasons, and Serena has followed suit in order to support her sister.
10. “Weird Al’ Yankovic
Last on the list, Weird Al music was a large part of my childhood, so I had to include him. For those of you who don’t know, Weird Al is known for making parodies of major hit songs like Like a Surgeon, Eat It, and Smells Like Nirvana. He is a strict vegetarian, and has dabbled from time to time in veganism. He became a vegetarian in 1992 after reading Diet For A New America.
