Vegan Cashew Almond Chocolate Shake

When my wife and I changed our entire way of eating to a whole foods plant based diet, we had a hard time for a while. It seemed like there wasn't much to eat and we really felt like we may be in for a life of boring foods.

Lucky for us, that didn't last very long, as we discovered a ton of great foods that are great tasting and great for us. One day we found an organic juice bar in our city and decided to check it out. There were the usual veggie and fruit type drinks, but there were also a few shake type drinks made with almond milk as the base.

We both got one and were blown away by how great it tasted. But there were a few problems. First, the owner of this organic bar put agave in most of the drinks. For me, I don't care if agave is "natural" or not. It is sugar and I want to avoid sugar in my life as much as possible. Second, these shakes were about $8, which is really a lot when you want to have one every day.

So we started experimenting at home and tried to make this shake ourselves. After a few tries and some tweaking, we got it, and now I want to share it with you. Since that day though we have added quite a few ingredients, so this is truly something that we came up with, and it is simply amazing.

So amazing in fact, that we have it probably about twenty times a month. I'm sure glad I'm not spending $250+ per month on these delicious shakes. This shake is not only amazing tasting, but it is 100% healthy. There is some sugar in here, but it's not in the form of any added sugar, and it is not enough to make a difference if you generally watch your sugar intake.

So, let's get to it, because I promise you will love this great tasting shake. This recipe is really simple too. You just add the ingredients in a blender and enjoy two minutes later.

Cashew Almond Chocolate Shake:

Ingredients: (serves 1)

  • 1 cup of ice
  • 1/2 cup carrot juice
  • 1/2 cup almond milk
  • 1 small handful of cashews (raw, organic)
  • 2 pitted dates
  • 1 frozen banana (If you use a room temperature banana you end up with a more runny shake. It is still delicious, but I like it to be more frozen. We cut up bananas in bulk and freeze them and it works out great.)
  • 1 tsp organic cacao powder

These ingredients will make a really great tasting shake, but if you really want this thing to taste amazing here are some optional ingredients. You can mix and match any of these and add more if you wish to.

Optional Ingredients:

  • 1 scoop vegetable protein powder (no sugar added, chocolate flavor)
  • 1 scoop maca powder
  • 1 tsp hemp seeds
  • 1 teaspoon organic, natural peanut butter


Mix and enjoy every day of your life!

We make ours with everything and it is great. I figured out the calories one day and it came to about 400. I am not a calorie counter, because when you eat truly healthy foods there is simply no need to fuss over calories for a second. I was curious as to how many it had, and was happy to see that such a healthy dessert could be so high in calories.

I guess I am a little odd, but considering that after eating the way that we eat now, there is simply never any weight gain, so eating a high calorie snack like this just makes me feel great.

If you love a chocolaty dessert after dinner, or if you just want a liquid lunch, this is a perfect way to start or end your day.
