Mmm…bacon. This tired comeback may be one of the worst we hear as vegans but that does not mean we cannot enjoy a good old BLT once in a while.
There are many options for plant-based bacon out there but my personal favorite is tempeh. Although quite tasty, coconut bacon and rice paper bacon do not cut it for me. The heartiness and subtle flavour of tempeh is what I crave when I think of eating a scrumptious sandwich.
Not only are fermented soybeans full of protein but they also provide a good dose of probiotic. Most importantly, you can use it to make the best vegan bacon.
For this recipe, you will need:
1 package of tempeh
¼ cup of oil of your choice (I like to use canola or sunflower)
¼ cup of vegetable broth
¼ cup of pure maple syrup
2 tablespoons of tamari
1 teaspoon of garlic powder
1 teaspoon of onion powder
Pinch of salt
1-2 drops of liquid smoke
If you can only find frozen tempeh, you will want to thaw it at room temperature before use or leave it in the fridge overnight until you are ready to make the bacon. Although fresh tempeh is the preferred option for this recipe, both will work fine.
Here is what you need to do:
1- Put the tempeh down on a cutting board and slice it in 10-12 strips of about a quarter of an inch each
2- Mix the oil, tamari, maple syrup, liquid smoke and the spices in a bowl
3- Heat up a pan on medium heat and cook the strips for 3-4 minutes on each side
4- Lay down the strips on a paper towel to cool them down
Here you have it, the best addition ever to your next BLT or any of your sandwiches. It's that good!
