Strawberry Passionfruit Smoothie

Strawberry Passionfruit Smoothie

Prep Time: 5 minutes

It is now summer in this half of the world which means that fruit trees are producing like mad. Trees are absolutely filled with balls of deliciousness to feed everyone plus the lucky animals and insects. Passionfruit vines grow like weeds here in central Bali. Their delicate purple flowers often litter the sidewalks after a storm which makes the ground look like soft bed sheets. Their fruit, the passionfruit, or markisas as they are known in Indonesian, grow in such quantities that they often fall to the ground and roll away, down the street, or float down the irrigation channels. It’s hard to believe that such a delicious fruit grows like a weed here because I remember paying quite a lot of money for these back in Canada.

A friend of mine invented this drink one lazy afternoon after harvesting several passionfruits from her massive organic garden. It’s sweet, tangy and incredibly flavourful.

For 4 glasses

2 passionfruits

1 cup frozen strawberries

1 cup water

coconut sugar (or maple syrup) to taste

This is quite easy.  Cut the passionfruits in half, scoop out the insides (compost the outer shell) and put everything in a blender and whizz for a minute until a smoothie is born! Using frozen strawberries adds the chill that is needed in the summer heat, but if you use fresh strawberries you may add a few ice cubes instead for the same effect.

Nice recipe! Voted! Here, they are called maracuya. And they are mixed with orange juice when they are mixed at all... most drink it without mixing it with anything, and it is delicious! I just had one yesterday. Mixing it with strawberries is a good idea!

Vote 4. I've never had a smoothie in my life ever Kristo, but your post just made me want one. I thought we were in similar climes, didn't know summer came in early over there. Hmmm, summer here is March to April.

Voted. I love this recipe, and this blog is poetically written too (I especially like "balls of deliciousness"!) Passion fruit are also quite expensive here in Britain (but then, so is everything!) I want to live in Indonesia, as you say, it is a vegan paradise!
