Why Sea Vegetables Are More Popular Than Ever and How to Use Them

The sales of sea vegetables have been steadily rising in recent times, thanks in no small part to their incredible health benefits and variety of uses. As people become more informed about the miraculous and unique properties and elements contained within various sea vegetables, the sales of products like kelp and wakame are greatly increasing. Research is ongoing as to the nutritional benefits of these vegetables and it doesn’t look like their popularity will be going away anytime soon.

In recent years, many of us have become aware of sea vegetables thanks to the increasing levels of media attention on their health benefits. The variety of vegetables on offer is no longer limited to just a couple of products. These days, we can fill entire sections of stores with sea vegetables such as sea beets, seaweeds, sea berries, and much, much more. With so many choices, there’s a sea vegetable to suit every taste, and they can all be used in a plethora of ways.

Why are people so interested in eating sea vegetables? Well, it’s because they offer some special health benefits that you won’t find anywhere else. For instance, just a small amount of a typical sea vegetable can easily give you more than enough of your recommended daily intake of iodine, along with many other essential vitamins and nutrients. Since these products grow in the sea, they remain relatively safe from the dangerous effects of certain types of pollution, allowing them to absorb all manner of vitamins and minerals. Many studies are ongoing in an attempt to explore the long-term health benefits of the consumption of these valuable veggies, but some scientists believe these miraculous foods are beneficial in terms of cancer prevention, immune system health, and the maintenance of a healthy circulation.

Particularly in Western countries, where large numbers of people are increasingly looking to lengthen their life span and prevent common Cancers, sea vegetables are a welcome sea change. These sorts of foods have been used in Eastern cuisine for centuries and have long been renowned for their beneficial properties. Nowadays, European and American markets are becoming much more interested and new producers are popping up all over these regions.

Since these vegetables are a relatively new part of many people’s diets, a lot of us aren’t sure about the best ways to select and prepare them. When buying sea vegetables, it is recommended to avoid those that seem to be moist. Instead, only select the products that have been thoroughly dried. Store your sea vegetables in sealed containers at room temperature for up to a year (in some cases-- be sure to double check). In terms of preparation, sea vegetables do not need to be cooked and can be added to salads, soups, sandwiches, and stir fry.
