A pig farm is currently under investigation. There are actually several investigations underway, including one by the company itself. The abuse happening right in the farm was denounced one man, who wishes to stay anonymous, and shared for all Canadians to know.
Undercover footage was taken at the facilities of Puratone Corp, located in Arborg, Manitoba, Canada. When animals with open sores are forced to stay in their miniature cages and piglets are euthanised by chucking them at walls and concrete floors, something is amiss. Something is wrong. Action needs to be taken. And it will be.
What seems to be more disturbing than the videos taken of abuse happening in the farm is that the industry claims that most of what was filmed is nothing more than standard practice for the pork industry, such as the slamming of pigs on the floor to kill them. The head veterinarian of the province will be looking at this to give his opinion on the matter.
Mercy for Animals Canada, who is responsible for the footage, is asking Montreal, Toronto and Winnipeg grocery stores to stop purchasing pork from companies that use gestation crates for the pregnant sows. Too small for them to move in, they are cramped and suffer greatly during their entire pregnancy. The fact that it is standard practice horrifies most Canadians.
Maple Leaf, a large provider of meat products in Canada, claims that they will perform an audit on Puratone’s animal welfare practices, claiming that they have a zero tolerance for animal abuse.
I highly doubt that they were unaware of the way the business runs its facilities. This is a company with a history of hygiene problems within the last few years, including the information in this article, for example. It is time people understood that meat is not the food humans need.
