Indonesian Vegetable Fritters

These fritters are popular roadside snacks throughout Indonesia. The contents vary depending on region, but usually taste of fresh vegetables and are always fun to eat.

1 cup flour

1 ½ cups water

1 cup beansprouts

½ cup scallions, chopped

1 tablespoon fresh ginger, chopped

1 garlic clove, chopped

½ cup corn kernels

½ cup shredded green cabbage

pinch of salt

oil for frying

In a large bowl, mix flour and water until you have a paste resembling a pancake batter. Add the rest of the ingredients to the mixture. Heat the oil in a frying pan over medium heat and scoop one ladle of mixture into the pan. Cook for 3-5 minutes per side, until golden brown.

When they are done, transfer to paper towel to collect excess oil.

Serve with hot sauce, sweet soy sauce, or my favourite, vinegar!

I love pakoras!! You know, I never made the comparison, but now that you mention it, it is pretty much the same thing minus the Indian spices. I will have a look at your article, Anita :)

No, pure-blood American! But I love East Indian food because I love the spices and they always have vegan options. I especially adore vegan palak paneer and samosas. They're delicious.

Oh - and I forgot the flat and crispy lentil bread that they serve with an especially spicy sauce. I adore chutney, too.

Vote #8 Kristo! Sounds yummy! A popular restaurant in Boaz, Alabama serves apple fritters dusted with powder sugar. A number of places serve corn fritters from time to time.
