How Veganism Helps Scott Jurek Win Marathons

Ever heard of Scott Jurek? He is a well known marathon runner who happens to espouse veganism as a key factor behind his winning performance during marathons. Scott stopped consuming meat and turned to a plant-based diet because he thinks that eating meat contributes to many illnesses. Scott is a licensed Physical Therapist so the illnesses his patients complained of were proof that eating meat does more harm than good.

 

Scott may have a point that veganism is the key to his winning marathons. Some marathons that he has won in the past are the Spartathlon in Greece which he won in 2006, 2007 and 2008; and the Western States Endurance Run which he won in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005. Because his running has brought him to many countries all over the world, Scott also developed cooking skills with the ingredients used being mainly plant based. Veganism seems to be a major component of his training strategy which may explain why he is able to withstand the rigors of running in the so-called ultramarathons.

 

Scott also hasa good attitude towards doing marathons. He doesn’t take winning itself seriously and tries to stay lighthearted during the race. Of course, being a Physical Therapist is also an important factor behind his physical fitness, aside from veganism. Scott does other forms of training as well such as yoga, Nordic skiing, and cycling. All these may support Scott’s veganism lifestyle so that he is able to stay in top form and recover faster than his competitors.

 

Scott’s success in ultramarathons helps him to spread the word about benefits of being on a plant-based diet. For those who have doubts about veganism, one look at Scott’s running resume may be convincing proof enough that the diet may be key to being physically fit after all.

    I have to agree living a vegan lifestyle and chaging the way you eat can help you in so many ways especially give you more energy. I found years ago when I stopped eating meat that I felt so much better. After this I became vegan 8 years back. The change was not so difficult because I was almost vegan as it was. Thank you for sharing ths information.
