Grandma’s Classic Vegan Apple Pie

Baking is something that seems difficult but once you get a hang of it, you won’t find it difficult. Today, I am going to share the recipe of classic vegan apple pie. My grandma use to make apple pie and this is her recipe but I’ve simplified this version so that even beginners will find it easy to make it. This apple pie’s filling is rather easy and quick to prepare. This recipe is especially for those who are trying their hand at baking for the first time. The instructions are pretty simple and the ingredients are readily available. So let’s get started.

Ingredients:

For the crust:

·         2 cups of all-purpose flour

·         1 cup of barley flour

·         1 teaspoon of sea salt

·         1 tablespoon of vegan butter

For the filling:

·         3 cups of sliced apples

·         ½ tablespoon of apple juice

·         ½ cup of powdered sugar

·         1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder

·         1 teaspoon of lemon juice

·         2 tablespoons of cornstarch

·         A pinch of salt

Method:

Step 1: Pre-heat the oven to 300 degrees F. In the meantime, we can prepare the crust.

Step 2: For the crust, take a bowl and add the all-purpose flour, barley flour, sea salt, vegan butter, and mix well.  You can add water and knead the dough. Make sure that the dough is not too hard.

Step 4: Now, roll out the dough into a 12-14 inch circle. Take the pie pan and place the rolled out circle at the bottom of the pan, while you spread the edges of the circle onto the edges of the pie pan.

Step 5:  Now for the filling, add the sliced apples, apple juice, cornstarch and powdered sugar to a pan and let the mixture boil for 5 minutes on a low flame. Lastly, add the lemon juice and cinnamon powder.

Step 6: Next, add the thick filling to the crust and spread it evenly.

Step 7: Now for the top, you can roll out the dough and cut many 2-inch wide strips and put them on top of the filling in a crisscross manner, so that the filling is covered properly.

Step 8: Crimp the edges and apply some water with a brush on the top. You can also dust some powdered sugar and poke some holes on the top as well so that the steam can escape.

Step 9: Bake the pie for 40-50 minutes and check if the colour has turned golden brown.

Once the pie is ready remove it from the oven and cut it into pieces. Serve the pie with some lemon or green tea.
