Food, Thoughts and Desires

Since I started exploring this path, I have made some amazing discoveries. I studied in a school which in spite of being in India was highly influenced by the western world. Ancient Indian education is almost destroyed and very little of it is available to us. I recently got to learn a little about Ayurveda and Bhagwat Gita, the holy book of Hindus.

Most of the work was in Sanskrit so we do not have that much access to it now. I find myself blessed to know and share this information here. What we always studied and bothered about was the nutritional content of any food that we consume. Modern science does not lay any emphasis on the life-energy or prana inside the food we eat.

Scientifically, some foods maybe good for the body but they are still not considered to be good according to the ancient sciences. My knowledge is not good enough to map everything in the ancient sciences with the modern sciences but I am surely experimenting and finding new things. It is amazing to realize how the food we eat affects our state of mind.

There was a discussion on desires and how one can easily get obsessive trying to fulfill one desire after another without even taking the time out to enjoy the desired. Someone asked an unexpected question – "Can we stop desires from arising?" I had no idea. I always assumed the answer was no. But the speaker said "Yes, through food."

Of course I wanted the answer. Restlessness is a killer. You plan out one thing and begin to do it but it does not let you complete. Your mind is at different places at the same time. The more you want to fight it, the more it wanders. And the solution lies in food - Raw food. The more raw food we consume, the lesser desires will arise in our minds.

I did the experiment on myself by preparing salads (raw and organic) for my lunch a couple of times and did observe the difference. Raw food is definitely something we all need in our generation. Of course, the nutrition level is higher and it is also good for a healthy mind. I will be covering the food that makes us restless in an upcoming post. So keep reading!

There are questionnaires available on the net too that help you identify your constitution (or Prakruti) but it is best to contact an Ayurvedic doctor. They are able to detect your constitution through your pulse. They recommend a diet based on your constitution and the imbalances currently present in your body.

Once you know your constitution, you will realize that you need not eat anything just because your friend or family member does. You eat what is good for you. You get diet charts consisting of foods that are good for your body type. Most people avoid and cure diseases just by a little change in lifestyle and diet.

Vote #5! Akanksha, you mentioned eating for your body type. There is an infomercial on television that advertises eating for your body type to lose weight; however, the program being sold is rather expensive. I would definitely love to read more about eating for your body type. Thanks!

Thanks Carolyn! I am not sure how easy it would be to find an Ayurvedic doctor there. You can do well by trying some questionnaires online and reading about it. Make the changes slowly and you will learn how to listen to your body :) You can find a lot of information on this site http://www.chopra.com/ayurveda Here is a direct link to the quiz page - http://doshaquiz.chopra.com/ Though I usually follow and prefer Art of Living, this one looks pretty good..

Voted, although it had reached TPs very quickly as usual, congrats! Fascinating blog, I am sure there is a lot of truth in these theories. I think I am going to have to go completely raw vegan after reading this; I have been thinking about it a while anyway, for reasons of physical health, but I had no idea it could help your mental and spiritual health too! I am a naturally edgy, restless, stressy sort of person, I do tend to go from one thing to another quickly, and I have been wondering lately how to stop all these different ideas, desires, etc, from tumbling around my head all the time! I do meditate, but maybe changing my diet to include more raw food in the answer too. Thank you for such an informative and valuable post.

M Voted! This article definately has encouraged me to do some experimenting of my own. I'm going to need to do a bit of shopping. I am seeing more organic kale in my future. There is one thing that I am trying to do, that is giving up the frequent desire for harmful foods that I can definatly go without. Like candy, cookies and just about any of the number of items that come in a package or containers. Most recently I have given up milk cartons. While I found the almond milk and coconut milk to be very tastey I have replaced it with a greater intake of dark greens and bright reds, orange and purples aong other colorful raw foods.
