Well, veg heads, in case you don't know: it's happened. Popular vegan bloggers Dan and Annie Shannon have led us down their blog adventure of veganizing each and every recipe from Betty Crocker's 2005 version of the Betty Crocker Cookbook. And now? They've got a book to show for it. We so enjoy the Meet the Shannons blog here at The Flaming Vegan, we thought we'd let you in on their about their journey through the blogosphere and beyond.
Beginning when Annie watched the 2009 film "Julie and Julia" and decided to cook her way through "The Joy of Cooking", only to be horrified by it's intense focus on all things animal, Shannon finally found herself ultimately attracted to America's iconic bright red Betty Crocker binder. After deciding that she and Dan could make anything "vegan and fat", the two embarked on the hilarious and amazingly documented, (three year) journey of cooking, eating, blogging, and noting their way through the first draft of their now surefire vegan classic: Betty Goes Vegan: 500 Recipes for the Modern American Family.
We can't pick just one blog post from the online adventure to recommend to you. It's epic and heartwarming in it's entirety. It's romantic and wrought with witty banter. At times it catches you off guard with the co-mingling of references to Emerson and hip hop slang from the nineties. It's filled with incredible food, fun, just enough failure, and even the appropriately candid sharing of personal grief and loss. Occasionally, Meet the Shannon's posts are full of perfectly righteous prescriptions for righteous ethical behavior. And they're done so well and so subtly, you'll welcome them if you don't miss them. Theirs is a story worth following. And the book? Brilliant.
In the world of veganism, what better method of bridge-building for reluctant eaters, than co-opting one of America's most mainstream and treasured culinary institutions? We salute you, Shannons, and wish you all the best as you take us along on your next adventure.
Tell us your thoughts, Flaming Vegan community! Have you prepared any of these incredible recipes yet? Been inspired by a blog post or two? We'd love to hear about it!
