Bhakarwadi- An Indian Vegan Snack

Indian snacks are the best kind because they range from sweet and spicy to sour and tangy. The combination of flavours that can be achieved with just a few spices is absolutely amazing. Now though I like experimenting with most of my recipes, I will stick with the traditional one this time.

So today, I am going to share with you’ll a recipe of an Indian snack called bhakarwadi. The snack originally belongs to the state of Maharashtra. It is made from gram flour, coconut, sesame, and poppy seeds. This deep fried crispy snack is perfect to go along with your cup of tea. So let tell you the exact ingredients you’ll need for this one.

Ingredients:

For the dough

·         1 cup of Bengal gram flour

·         ¼ cup of all-purpose flour

·         ¼ teaspoon of salt

·         ¼ teaspoon of turmeric

·         1/8 teaspoon of asafoetida

·         3 tablespoons of oil 

·         ¼ cup of room temperature water

 

For the spice mix

·         4 tablespoons of coconut powder

·         2 tablespoons of sesame seeds

·         3 teaspoons of fennel seeds

·         2 teaspoons of coriander seeds

·         1 teaspoon of cumin seeds

·         1 teaspoon of red chili powder

·         ½ teaspoon of garam masala

·         1/8 teaspoon of asafoetida

·         1 teaspoon of salt

·         2 tablespoons of sugar

·         1 tablespoons of lemon juice

 

For preparing the Bhakarwadi

·         2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour

·         2 tablespoons of besan Bengal gram flour

·         Oil to fry

 

 

Directions

Step 1: For the dough, you’ll have to mix all the dry ingredients, which are the all-purpose flour, salt, turmeric, asafoetida, and Bengal gram flour. Next, add the oil and slowly pour in the water to make a sort of firm dough. Cover the dough with a plate for about 15 minutes.

Step 2: Now for the spice filling, mix all the spice ingredients except the lemon juice and sugar. Grind the remaining ingredients to a fine powder. Then add the sugar and lemon juice, stir the mixture and keep it aside.

Step 3: To make the bhakarwadi, you will have to mix 2 tablespoons of the Bengal gram flour with 3 tablespoons of water to make a thin batter. Then you can set this aside.

Step 4: Now, take the dough that you’ve prepared and roll it into a ball. Slowly flatten it out with a rolling surface. Dust some of the flour onto it so that it becomes easier to roll the dough.

Step 5: Next, spread the filling evenly across the flattened dough, but remember to leave a quarter of an inch all around the border.

Step 6:  Roll the sheet till it becomes a log. Then take a knife and slice the log like a cucumber.

Step 7:  Heat a pan and add some oil, so that you can deep fry the bhakarwadi over a medium high flame. You can fry the bhakarwadi while it cooks for about 5 to 8 minutes or until its golden brown.

Store the bhakarwadi in an airtight container for a few days, if you like. Hope you enjoy this Indian vegan snack!
