Summer means relaxing outdoors and eating indulgent food around the campfire. There is perhaps no more satisfying summer food than the s’more, made with three humble ingredients: marshmallows, chocolate and graham crackers. These foods all have animal-free options, so vegans can enjoy this summer treat.
It’s hard to make a s’more without the sticky, gooey goodness of the marshmallow. There are a few gelatin-free options on the market. Dandies and Sweet & Sara are two brands of vegan marshmallows with the sweet flavor and fluff that make the s’more what it is. If you can’t find vegan marshmallows in a shop near you, order a batch online in time for summer.
Dark chocolate might be mostly cocoa, but there may be dairy products hidden in the ingredient list. Check out the label and avoid whey and casein, as well as milk and milk solids which are sure signs it’s not a vegan bar. Whole Foods’ Organic Dark Chocolate and Green & Black’s Organic Dark Chocolate are two widely available vegan options.
If you don’t eat honey, graham crackers can be tricky. Try switching them out for digestives, or choose a brand of graham cracker that’s stripped down to the bare essentials. Nabisco Original Graham Crackers are sweetened with molasses and sugar.
Put It Together
Once you’ve got the supplies, create your s’more. Roast your marshmallow over the fire and spread it on a graham cracker. Add a slab of chocolate and place a second cracker on top to make the perfect sweet sandwich. If you’re spending the evening in, place the marshmallow on one cracker and put it in the microwave.
Bonus Tip: Don't be afraid to swap out the chocolate slab for vegan chocolate chips. If you're particularly ambitious, melt the chocolate first and use it as a dip for your marshmallow-graham cracker sandwich.
